Autism Awareness Month, Help Vertex Fitness Raise Money

Vertex Fitness participates in a program called Sweat Angels by Causely. For every check-in to Vertex Fitness on social media done by our clients, a donation is made to the cause of the month. In April, we’ve partnered with The Autism Site and GreaterGood.org for autism awareness and acceptance month. Every 2 check-ins throughout April will provide one minute of therapy to an autistic child and their family. Through this program, over 770,000 minutes of therapy have been provided to families that need and deserve it.

Autism Awareness and Support

The Autism Site provides access to incredible play therapy sessions that promote long-term and short-term memory, stimulate language, negotiation, and communication skills. Play sessions also nourish each family by relieving stress and forging important emotional bonds. The hashtag this month is #autismawareness. This April, clients of Vertex Fitness can check in on Facebook when they come in to their weekly workouts, and use the hashtag #autismawareness to help children and families with autism! Every check in sends a donation to The Autism Site.

What is Autism, and How Does it Affect Families?

Autism is a diagnosis that describes a whole spectrum of strengths and challenges that can differ greatly from person to person. The Autism Speaks advocacy group gives this definition:

“Autism, or autism spectrum disorder (ASD), refers to a broad range of conditions characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech and nonverbal communication. According to the Centers for Disease Control, autism affects an estimated 1 in 59 children in the United States today.

We know that there is not one autism but many subtypes, most influenced by a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Because autism is a spectrum disorder, each person with autism has a distinct set of strengths and challenges. The ways in which people with autism learn, think and buy soma online problem-solve can range from highly skilled to severely challenged. Some people with ASD may require significant support in their daily lives, while others may need less support and, in some cases, live entirely independently.”

You can also read a great comic that addresses some common misunderstandings surrounding autism, created by an autistic person. There is no simple or cookie-cutter definition of autism that applies to all or even most autistic people, as autism can present in many different ways. People with autism live rich lives and participate in society in many ways, and it is important to spread autism awareness to help end stigma for people living with autism and other developmental disorders.
